Frustration : Le Post-Punk Français Sans Filtre Ni Concession

Let's get straight to the point: if post-2000 French rock needed a defibrillator shock, it was Frustration that pushed the button.

The name alone sets the tone. No lace, no frills. When Frustration bursts onto the stage or out of your speakers, they aren't there just to make up the numbers: it’s an electric shock straight to the solar plexus.

The Born Bad Spark

To understand the phenomenon, we have to go back to 2006. At the time, a brand-new Parisian label called Born Bad Records was looking for its very first record to press. It would be Frustration’s Full Of Sorrow EP. Eighteen years later, the label has become an underground institution, and the band remains its proud standard-bearer.

Here, you won't find conservatory-trained musicians with overly neatly combed hair. The members come from punk, garage, and the pure DIY (Do It Yourself) circuit. And you can feel it.

The Molotov Cocktail Recipe

Take a heavy, repetitive bassline that grabs you by the gut, stick some piercing guitar riffs on top, add a cold, eighties-style coldwave synth, and cover the whole thing with Fabrice Gilbert’s gritty, haunted vocals.

Inspired by the sacred monsters of the British post-punk scene (Joy Division, Wire, The Fall), Frustration injects an urban urgency and a grit entirely their own. It sweats, it hits hard, it makes heads nod and floors shake in dark concert venues.

Why You Need to Listen to Them Immediately

Because Frustration is one of the rare bands that doesn't age—they only get better in urgency. From album to album—from the essential Relax to the powerful Our Decisions released in 2024—the formula remains razor-sharp.

Live, it’s a pagan mass where the boundary between the stage and the pit shatters. No artifice, just five guys rocking out with the exact same fervor they had at 20.

Where to Start Listening?

? **Blind** (the early days' anthem)
? **Too Many Questions** (for the hypnotic bass)
? **Slave Markets** (featuring Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods, pure concentrated rage)

So plug in your headphones, turn the volume up to 11, and let yourself get carried away. Frustration is the ultimate proof that French post-punk still has a very bright future ahead of it!
